Pitch is the steepness of a roof, usually measured as the angle of the roof slope or as the amount it rises over a set horizontal run. It is expressed either as an angle in degrees (the usual UK convention) or as a ratio such as 4:12, and it matters because it controls how well a roof sheds water and which materials can safely cover it.

  • Run is the horizontal distance from the outside wall in to the centre point beneath the ridge, in other words half the span.
  • Span is the full horizontal width of the roof, from one wall plate to the other.

How to measure roof pitch

You can measure roof pitch with a spirit level and a tape measure, working either on the roof or from inside the loft. Both methods give you the rise over a set run, which you then read as a ratio or convert to degrees.

  1. In the loft (usually the safer option): Hold a level horizontally against the underside of a rafter. Measure 300 mm (or 12 inches) along the level, then measure vertically from that point up to the rafter. That vertical figure is your rise over that run.
  2. On the roof surface: Rest a level on the slope, hold it horizontal, and measure the gap from the 300 mm mark down to the roof. This works but requires safe access.
  3. Phone app: A pitch or angle app uses your phone’s sensors to read the slope when held against a rafter or roof edge. Quick, though accuracy depends on using it correctly.

Roof pitch in Scotland: slate, tenements and the weather

Traditional Scottish roofs tend to be steeply pitched, and for good reason.
